Functional Capacity Evaluation

What is a Functional Capacity Evaluation?

A Functional Capacity Evaluation is a series of tests that is created to determine an individual's physical capabilities, mental health and capacity to perform tasks specifically related to their job. This evaluation assesses their current physical and mental health and helps dedicated professionals to effectively determine their suitability for work duties. Functional Capacity Evaluations also inform injury prevention, required adjustments in the workplace, and, in the instance of poor health or injury, rehabilitation programs.

The FCE report provides:

  • Gives clear conclusions on whether the individual can in their present physical state, return to employment, whether that be to their own and/or a suited role, depending on the nature of the referral
  • Helps identify any barriers to employment, and any issues that are required to be addressed in order to expedite a safe and successful return to work
  • Where appropriate, recommendations are provided on work-focused parameters for further rehabilitation and/or reasonable adaptations/modifications that are required in the workplace to help the individual back into the workplace

Where is a Functional Capacity Evaluation Used?
